DO YOGA IN THE PARADISE

March 11th, 2008 Posted in Health & Spa | No Comments »

Following Koh Samui which has long boasted being a dream “Yoga Destination” for vacationers, now Phuket is getting busy with many new Yoga classes which undoubtedly will make it the next Yoga Hot Spot of the Andaman.

After the heat is “on” for sometimes for those who have got the taste of how to twist and turn in the Hot Yoga class (where the practice room is heated so that you would sweat even just by sitting there and do nothing), now arrives the Ashtanga Yoga. This style comes straight from South India, where the renowned 92-year-old living Master “Sri K. Pattabhi Jois” teaches thousands of his students each year.

Many people may have heard the names like “Power Yoga”, “Flow Yoga”, “Vinyasa Yoga” etc. Chances are that those classes are modified from this authentic yet very powerful Ashtanga Yoga. And you sure will be surprised by how much you sweat even just by simply doing Suryanamaskara (Sun Salutations)!

ashtanga-yoga-phuket-jonas.jpg

What’s so unique about Ashtanga Yoga is the “Vinyasa”—a Sanskrit word meaning “breath linking movement”—which links one Asana to the next. Done correctly, the practice generates intense internal heat, which naturally removes toxins and purifies the organs. Anything in excess including extra weight would gradually be rid of. The result is overall improving health conditions, strength, and flexibility.

Sukko Spa is proud to offer traditional Ashtanga Yoga class at their stunningly beautiful studio, overlooking the green mountains. Class is taught by a teacher authorized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the same tradition as currently taught in Mysore, India, hence the name “Mysore class”. This method suits best for both newcomers and more experienced practitioners, as students are taught on an one-on-one basis to move through the sequence at their own pace. Beginners are encouraged to modify and move slowly. Guided by their own breaths and movements, an awareness is cultivated and a calm mind is developed through the practice.

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is fond of saying “Ashtanga Yoga is 99% practice, 1% theory.” He also said in his book “Yoga Mala” that “It is impossible to try to describe the sweetness of sugar. Only by tasting sugar can the experience of sweetness be had, so too will people experience the happiness of Asana by practicing it.”

So it’s time to get on the mat and do the practice!

Royal Thai Silk for Youthful Skin

February 9th, 2008 Posted in Health & Spa | No Comments »

Silk has been integral part of modern Thai culture. Internationally renowned for its texture, pattern and color, Thai silk is highly covered. Recently it revealed another of its many secrets.

A joint research conducted by the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the office of Atomic Energy for Peace, Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Medical Science and the Ministry of Public Health, found that powder derived from Thai silk nests contains high-quality proteins with 18 amino acids, anti-oxidants, as well as antibacterial and anti-viral substances.

Apparently, Thai silk powder has a higher proportion of these substances than those found in any other silk species. The particles of Thai silk powder are so small that they can be easily absorbed through the skin, helping to nourish and maintain it completely. The amino acids penetrate skin cells and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, making skin healthier and more youthful. Besides containing anti-microbial agents and anti-oxidants, Thai silk powder also helps rid the body of cellular toxins, reduce inflammation in cells and fight skin bacteria. They are also beneficial in treating scar tissue and acne.

Sukko Spa Royal Thai Silk Powder

Sukko Royal Thai Silk Facial Mask, 100% chemical free Thai silk powder, is an excellent boost for any kind of tired or mature skin which will enhance the youthful beauty naturally.

“Loy Kra Thong” Festival @ Sukko Spa

January 5th, 2008 Posted in Activities & Movement | No Comments »

loy-kra-tong-festival-at-sukko-spa-phuket.jpgAbout “Loy-Kra-Thong”
One of the most popular festivals in early November is the Loy Krathong Festival.  It tales place at a time when the weather is fine as the rainy season is over and there is a high water lever all over the country.

“Loy” means “to float” and a “Krathong” is a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves.  The Krathong usually contains a candle, three joss-sticks, some flowers and coins.

In fact, the festival is of Brahmin origin in which people offer thanks to the Goddess of the water.  Thus, by moonlight, people light the candles and joss-sticks, make a wish and launch their Krathongs on canals, rivers or even small ponds.  It is believed that the Krathongs carry away sins and bad luck, and the wishes that have been made for the new year due to start.  Indeed, it is the time to be joyful and happy as the sufferings are floated away.

The festival starts in the evening when there is a full moon in the sky People of all walks of life carry their Krathongs to the nearby rivers.  After lighting candles and joss-sticks and making a wish, they gently place the Krathongs on the water and let them drift away till they go out of sight.

“Loy Kra Thong” festival at Sukko spa was held on 24 Nov. 2007

What’s YOGA? {Part 2}

December 29th, 2007 Posted in Health & Spa, Activities & Movement | No Comments »

yoga

Fitness fads come and go, but yoga has been a worldwide workout staple for 5,000 years. Since yoga was introduced to this country in the 1960s, participation has been growing steadily. Today, yoga has more followers than ever as people begin to look for a workout that taps into all aspects of self — physical, mental and spiritual. Is yoga the perfect workout for the new millennium? Decide for yourself.

What is it?
In its simplest terms, yoga is an exercise system that consists of a series of poses, postures and positions. It was developed in India about 5,000 years ago to promote union of the mind, body and spirit. For that reason, yoga classes have a different feel than most traditional Western-type workouts. The typical yoga workout is a blend of strength, flexibility and body awareness exercises. Besides the physical aspects of the workout, most yoga classes also include a spiritual element; it’s not unusual for a class to include some chanting, prayer, candles or incense.

There are many forms of yoga, but Hatha is the most common. Hatha yoga includes all of the basic yoga moves and breathing exercises but doesn’t include the religious or spiritual aspects of some other forms. All yoga forms aim to increase your physical fitness as well as your ability to maintain positive thoughts and feelings.

Why we love it: Yoga offers an active time-out to energize your body and calm your mind. Most people begin to see and feel improvements in their flexibility, strength and stress levels after only a few classes. Yoga is also portable — take it on the road; no equipment is necessary. It is also affordable in that it is often available at many health clubs at no additional charge. Studio classes cost $5-20 depending on where you live.

Drawbacks: There are as many as six main branches of yoga, and then those branch out even more. Once you pick a yoga style, it may take time to get used to the terminology and the moves. If flexibility isn’t your strong suit, you need yoga, but trying to get into and out of some of the moves may leave you feeling like a frustrated, discouraged pretzel. Yoga also has its own terminology and jargon, so you may feel as if you’re trying to learn a foreign language as well as get your body into shape.

Insider information: Know yourself. Yoga classes range from moderately taxing to extremely challenging, so choose one that suits your abilities and fitness level. A good yoga instructor should appear calm and in control. Note whether the instructor explains the movements before doing them. She should also describe which muscles are being exercised. She should move around the room making corrections to your form as necessary. Choose a class that suits the level of spirituality you’re looking for from your workout as well. If you’re not into all that golden-ball-of-light stuff, then candles and prayers will just annoy you.

Sample Move: The Cobra1. Lie face down with your arms at your sides, palms up, with your forehead on your mat or padded surface. Place your hands underneath your shoulders, palms down, with your finger-tips facing inward. 2. Tilt your head backward and begin raising your head, chest, and stomach off the floor. Push upward with your hands and slowly straighten your arms. Do not push this pose past point of moderate tension in your lower back, neck, shoulders or elbows. Hold position for 10 seconds. 3.Slowly tilt your head forward and lower back to the start. Relax, concentrating especially on your legs, back and stomach.

Focus: Removes tension from the spine and back, strengthens and firms the abdomen and buttocks.

Comments: Do not force movement. Keep your arms slightly bent if necessary. Keep the spine loose and flexible without strain on the lower back.
