“Loy Kra Thong” Festival @ Sukko Spa

January 5th, 2008 Posted in Activities & Movement | No Comments »

loy-kra-tong-festival-at-sukko-spa-phuket.jpgAbout “Loy-Kra-Thong”
One of the most popular festivals in early November is the Loy Krathong Festival.  It tales place at a time when the weather is fine as the rainy season is over and there is a high water lever all over the country.

“Loy” means “to float” and a “Krathong” is a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves.  The Krathong usually contains a candle, three joss-sticks, some flowers and coins.

In fact, the festival is of Brahmin origin in which people offer thanks to the Goddess of the water.  Thus, by moonlight, people light the candles and joss-sticks, make a wish and launch their Krathongs on canals, rivers or even small ponds.  It is believed that the Krathongs carry away sins and bad luck, and the wishes that have been made for the new year due to start.  Indeed, it is the time to be joyful and happy as the sufferings are floated away.

The festival starts in the evening when there is a full moon in the sky People of all walks of life carry their Krathongs to the nearby rivers.  After lighting candles and joss-sticks and making a wish, they gently place the Krathongs on the water and let them drift away till they go out of sight.

“Loy Kra Thong” festival at Sukko spa was held on 24 Nov. 2007

What’s YOGA? {Part 2}

December 29th, 2007 Posted in Health & Spa, Activities & Movement | No Comments »

yoga

Fitness fads come and go, but yoga has been a worldwide workout staple for 5,000 years. Since yoga was introduced to this country in the 1960s, participation has been growing steadily. Today, yoga has more followers than ever as people begin to look for a workout that taps into all aspects of self — physical, mental and spiritual. Is yoga the perfect workout for the new millennium? Decide for yourself.

What is it?
In its simplest terms, yoga is an exercise system that consists of a series of poses, postures and positions. It was developed in India about 5,000 years ago to promote union of the mind, body and spirit. For that reason, yoga classes have a different feel than most traditional Western-type workouts. The typical yoga workout is a blend of strength, flexibility and body awareness exercises. Besides the physical aspects of the workout, most yoga classes also include a spiritual element; it’s not unusual for a class to include some chanting, prayer, candles or incense.

There are many forms of yoga, but Hatha is the most common. Hatha yoga includes all of the basic yoga moves and breathing exercises but doesn’t include the religious or spiritual aspects of some other forms. All yoga forms aim to increase your physical fitness as well as your ability to maintain positive thoughts and feelings.

Why we love it: Yoga offers an active time-out to energize your body and calm your mind. Most people begin to see and feel improvements in their flexibility, strength and stress levels after only a few classes. Yoga is also portable — take it on the road; no equipment is necessary. It is also affordable in that it is often available at many health clubs at no additional charge. Studio classes cost $5-20 depending on where you live.

Drawbacks: There are as many as six main branches of yoga, and then those branch out even more. Once you pick a yoga style, it may take time to get used to the terminology and the moves. If flexibility isn’t your strong suit, you need yoga, but trying to get into and out of some of the moves may leave you feeling like a frustrated, discouraged pretzel. Yoga also has its own terminology and jargon, so you may feel as if you’re trying to learn a foreign language as well as get your body into shape.

Insider information: Know yourself. Yoga classes range from moderately taxing to extremely challenging, so choose one that suits your abilities and fitness level. A good yoga instructor should appear calm and in control. Note whether the instructor explains the movements before doing them. She should also describe which muscles are being exercised. She should move around the room making corrections to your form as necessary. Choose a class that suits the level of spirituality you’re looking for from your workout as well. If you’re not into all that golden-ball-of-light stuff, then candles and prayers will just annoy you.

Sample Move: The Cobra1. Lie face down with your arms at your sides, palms up, with your forehead on your mat or padded surface. Place your hands underneath your shoulders, palms down, with your finger-tips facing inward. 2. Tilt your head backward and begin raising your head, chest, and stomach off the floor. Push upward with your hands and slowly straighten your arms. Do not push this pose past point of moderate tension in your lower back, neck, shoulders or elbows. Hold position for 10 seconds. 3.Slowly tilt your head forward and lower back to the start. Relax, concentrating especially on your legs, back and stomach.

Focus: Removes tension from the spine and back, strengthens and firms the abdomen and buttocks.

Comments: Do not force movement. Keep your arms slightly bent if necessary. Keep the spine loose and flexible without strain on the lower back.

What’s YOGA

December 21st, 2007 Posted in Health & Spa, Activities & Movement | No Comments »

act-yoga1.jpgYoga

Based on ancient meditative and breathing practices, yoga can have major physical and mental health benefits. Believe it or not, you can relax and firm up at the same time by practicing yoga regularly. Yoga not only offers a complete method of stretching and strengthening the body, but some types even raise your heart rate and help you lose weight.

Is Yoga Really Exercise?

For thousands of years, yoga has been practiced as a tonic for body, mind and spirit. This ancient discipline encourages relaxation through controlled breathing, meditation and striking various body poses.

In recent decades, yoga has become increasingly popular in the United States. But is yoga really a form of exercise? Experts say the answer is “yes.”

Mind and Spirit Yoga is an excellent form of exercise for the mind and spirit. The deep breathing and meditation of hatha yoga (widely considered to be the most popular form of yoga in theUnited States) help you relax.

People who practice hatha yoga learn up to 30 poses or more, in varying degrees of complexity. Practitioners also learn to control their breathing. The concentration required during a yoga session helps take your mind away from daily stresses.

As a result, practicing yoga may help you sleep better. You may also develop more effective coping skills and a more optimistic outlook.

A recent  Boston University study found that one hour of yoga boosts levels of gamma-aminobutyric, a neurotransmitter that helps reduce anxiety and depression. Researchers concluded that combining yoga with other treatments (such as medication and psychotherapy) may promote emotional stability.

Physical Benefits

Yoga is also good exercise for the body. Many of the poses associated with yoga require great physical flexibility. Even basic poses require you to stretch muscles, which increases your overall range of motion. This increased flexibility makes you less vulnerable to injury.

Learning new poses also helps you improve your kinesthetic awareness, which is your ability to know where your body is in space without looking at it. Balance improves as you learn and master more complex poses.

There are many different types of yoga routines. Some are more vigorous than others. Yoga that involves significant intensity (such as Ashtanga yoga and power yoga) may also boost muscular endurance and stamina.

Finally, yoga’s ability to promote relaxation can help lower your blood pressure. High blood pressure damages the heart, brain, kidneys and other parts of the body.

Taking Precautions

While yoga offers many benefits to body and mind, it also poses potential dangers for some populations.

People with a history of back or joint problems are urged to consult a physician before undertaking yoga. Pregnant women generally should refrain from performing twisting poses that place pressure on the uterus.

Certain health conditions also may limit the extent of your yoga practice. Consult a physician before performing yoga if you have high blood pressure, osteoporosis or a history of blood clots.

While yoga can be learned from books or videos, you’re more likely to properly master the technique by taking a yoga class. Churches, community organizations (such as the YWCA) and even health maintenance organizations may offer lessons. Once you’ve taken classes, you can use books and videos to refine your technique.

How to Have Beautiful Skin

December 20th, 2007 Posted in Health & Spa | No Comments »

Everyone wants to have smooth and beautiful skin. You can achieve this by gathering the following ingredients, and following the simple steps below. It’s simple and takes little time. Apply a sunscreen to your skin and a chopstick/lip balm with SPF. Nutrition is also an important key factor. The system our body works is very simple, whatever you eat will show on you, be it good or bad to your health. Vitamin A helps repair body tissue, prevents skin dryness and postpones ageing. Vitamin A is fat soluble. Vitamin B improves circulation and skin color. It is found in yoghurt, brown bread, wheat germ, yeast, cereal and green leafy vegetables. Skin lightening or whitening is a cosmetic method used for de-pigmenting the skin. Keep in mind that stress can also play a part in unwanted skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

Skin lightening has become an important part of beautification of skin. Pollution and exposure to ultraviolet rays can harm your skin. Avoid morning eye or facial puffiness. Hydrating for dry or sensitive skin, or an astringent for oily or acne prone skin. Keeping the skin clean is very important as otherwise the cells will become dead and through them diseases spread. Bathing twice a day with cold water and mild soap is very important for keeping the skin clean. Beautification follows cleanliness. Vitamin C is also water soluble and can be taken on a daily basis. A cream or lotion for dry or sensitive skin, and a gel for oily or acne prone skin. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, this also helps to hydrate your skin and keep it looking healthy.

Stir the juice of half a lemon into one cup of plain yogurt. Keep it in the refrigerator and apply it as you would a cream every night before bed. A sun block for daily use is an absolute must. Apply to your face, neck and hands. Always follow up a cleanse with a moisturizer made for your skin type. Try to keep your hands off your face as much as possible. Body sweat triggers production of sebum, which is the skin’s own natural moisturizer. Regular in your exercise regime would also help in creating the right balance one would need to for you body and skin. Avoid smoking as it decreases the skin’s nutrients which fasten the aging process. Use products which are very gentle and would enhance your skins glow.

Healthy and Beautiful Skin Tips

1. Vitamin A helps repair body tissue, prevents skin dryness and postpones ageing.

2. Skin lightening or whitening is a cosmetic method used for de-pigmenting the skin.

3. Keep environmental pollutants from being absorbed into the skin.

4. Vitamin B is water soluble, which means it can be taken daily.

5. Drink eight glasses of clean, clear water every day.

6. Avoid excess caffeine, alcohol, sugar & salt.

Get serious about stress reduction. Skin conditions such as acne appear on many people who are stressed out, and chronic skin conditions then to get worse. Set aside quiet time to meditate or daydream. Be sure to get enough sleep. To avoid morning eye or facial puffiness, sleep on your back so fluid doesn’t collect there. And, you can keep the oil from your hair away from your face by wearing a head covering or a soft headband when you go to bed. Keep in mind that too much stress can affect your overall health as well as your complexion.

About The Sun and Safety

December 17th, 2007 Posted in Health & Spa | No Comments »

The sun is necessary to both our physical and emotional well- being. It greets us in the morning, allows us to see the sapphire sky, warms our body and soul and calls us to rest in the evening. But when we try to get too much of a good thing, it can be dangerous.

Sunlight is an electromagnetic radiation –energy of many different wavelengths emitted by the sun. The radiation affects us in varying ways depending on its wavelengths, which is measured in nanometers (NM). When light penetrates to the ground level, it is made up of about 5% ultraviolet or UV rays, 40% visible light and 55% infrared radiation.

The health bonuses from the sun are provided by infrared radiation (800-17,000 NM) and visible light (400-800 NM). Infrared rays give us the warmth we need to live, while visible light is the part of spectrum that our eyes need to see, that drives our biological rhythms and lifts our mood. Photosynthesis, the process by which plants create food molecules for themselves and other creatures via the food chain, also needs visible light.

Although very small amounts of UV rays (100-400 NM) promote the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin, they can also cause short and long term damage to exposed skin. UV rays are subdivided into three categories; UVC (100-290 NM), UVB (290-300NM) and UVA (320-400NM). UVB is responsible for 80-90% of sunburn, photo-aging and skin cancer.

However, we can still enjoy the great benefits of sunshine without suffering its hidden harmful effects. We just need to take a little extra care. It is overexposure and unprotected sun exposure that should be avoided, not sunshine. So, cover up with suitable clothes and always wear trusty sunscreen, even if there is a cool breeze or a cloudy sky. Reapply the sunscreen every hour or so if you are outdoors for prolonged periods and after swimming, perspiration or exercise.

If you have been overexposed to the sun, the following may help a little until natural healing takes place:

  • Apply a soothing preparation, such as aloe vera gel (that is at least 95% aloe vera) to the affected areas.
  • Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration.
  • For patches of sunburn, 100% pure lavender essential oil may be applied neat.
  • Soak in a lukewarm bath containing 8-10 drops of 100% pure lavender or chamomile (German) essential oil. Gently apply a light moisturizing lotion afterwards.
  • Stay out of the sun for a few days, until the redness and soreness have fully subsided.
  • If your skin has blistered significantly or you have symptoms such as shivering, headaches or nausea- consult a doctor immediately.
